The European Social Fund (ESF) is one of the four Structural Funds of the European Union which aims at promoting economic growth and social cohesion. The ESF is the main instrument of the European Union for human resource development and for the improvement of the labour market. It contributes substantially to meeting the needs of EU citizens for training and employment throughout Europe. In particular, the ESF contributes to the actions implemented under the European strategy and guidelines for employment.
ESF strategy and budget are determined by the EU Member States, the European Parliament, and the European Commission. On this basis, the Member States, in cooperation with the European Commission, plan seven-year Operational Programmes.
These Operational Programmes are implemented through a wide range of organizations, both public and private. These organizations include national, regional and local authorities, education and training institutions, NGOs as well as other social partners, like unions and labour councils, industry and business associations and individual companies.
The European Funds Management Unit of the Ministry of Education and Culture is acting as the Project Manager for all the co-financed projects undertaken by the Ministry of Education and Culture.
The EFM Unit is monitoring the following projects:
- Pre-Service Training Programme for Candidate Teachers of Secondary Education
- Programme for Greek language teaching, applicable to migrants and other foreign language speaking residents of Cyprus
- Programme against early school leaving, school failure and delinquency in Zones of Educational Priority
- In-Service Training of Secondary / Vocational School Teachers.
