According to the Law, pupils who are between the ages 6 – 15 years old (age for compulsory education) and are citizens of the Republic of Cyprus must attend an approved by the MOESY school, public or private. They must also be taught the official language of the Republic of Cyprus which is the Greek.
A private school must have the approval of the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth in order to function. You can find all licensed private schools.
Criteria for choosing a private school
Schools of the same type: Private schools of the same type are those schools which strictly follow the existing curricula of public schools.
Schools of similar type: Private schools of a similar type are those schools in which apart from other subjects, 2/3 of the major subjects offered in public schools are taught in relation to time and subject matter.
Schools of a different type: Private schools of a different type are those schools which do not belong to the above categories.
Internal Regulations for the Operation of a Private Primary Schools Every private school, regardless of type, must have approved by the MOESY operating internal regulations, similar in structure and content with the internal regulations of public schools.
Supervision and inspection The head and the teaching staff of a private school (same or similar type school) should have the qualifications required for the head and teaching staff of a public school. As for the qualifications of the head and staff of a private school (different type) the unanimous decision of the Advisory Committee for Private Education is required.
The head of a private school is responsible for the normal work of the school and has the same duties as the head of a public school.
The owner, the head and the teaching staff of a private school are obliged to allow the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth officers to visit the school and classrooms for inspection. A detailed report is made after the inspection.
Funding Textbooks published by the Organization of Textbooks in Greece which will be used by a private school are offered free to the pupils as it happens in public schools.

The fees of Turkish Cypriot pupils attending private schools, (pre-primary and primary) in the non occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus are fully subsidized by the state.
The MOESY subsidizes the fees of Latin and Maronite pupils with Cypriot citizenship attending their “national” schools (Terra Santa in Lefkosia and Saint Mary’s in Lemesos).
The fees (registration, tuition, books) of Turkish Cypriot pupils attending private schools in the non-occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus are fully subsidized by the state.
