In order to provide Special Education in Pre-primary, Primary and Special Schools, the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth (MOESY) employs teachers specialised in the education of children with mental, emotional and other problems, as well as teachers for the deaf and the blind and specialists in areas such as audiology, physiotherapy, physical education, music therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. For the provision of Special Education in Secondary Schools, teachers are selected by the school management in collaboration with the Special Education Coordinator based on specific criteria. Also, the special needs of the children are served by auxiliary staff.
The MOESY has as one of its primary objectives the professional development of the specialists working in special education and to inform and sensitise inspectors, headteachers, class teachers, and special education teachers regarding the basic provisions of the Law and the responsibilities of each member of the school unit towards children with special needs attending their school. This is accomplished through:
in-service conferences and meetings organised by the Departments of Education;
compulsory and optional seminars offered by the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute.
