DEPARTMENT OF SECONDARY TECHNICAL AND VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Within the framework of the Strategic Planning and following the Decision by the Council of Ministers on April 15, 2015, the Directorate of Secondary Technical and Vocational Education and Training implemented the Technical and Vocational Education and Training System (STEEK) with the core aim to address the impact of the economic crisis, to adapt to the continuous economic changes as well as to develop specialized skilled, suitably qualified and flexible human resources.

The Directorate’s vision is to ensure an integrated, attractive, flexible and high-quality Technical and Vocational Education and Training System, that responds to the current and future needs of the Cypriot economy and society as they emerge from the constantly changing local and international economic and technological environment.

The mission of the Directorate of Secondary Technical and Vocational Education and Training is to educate and empower individuals (pupils and students) in basic skills as well as in specific professional knowledge, skills and competences to better exploit opportunities and address challenges in society, the economy and the workplace, and creating a suitable background for further technical and technological studies. Empowerment also extends to the acquisition of experience through practical training programs in the workplace.

In all European countries, Technical and Vocational Education and Training is a powerful component for growth and creative emulation, which contributes to social cohesion. In 2013, almost 49% of the 22 million students in the upper secondary education in the European Union, attended Technical and Vocational Education and Training programs.

Surveys have shown that in countries where the Technical and Vocational Education and Training is developed, unemployment rates are lower and this is due to the fact that entering the labour market is easier through Technical and Vocational Education. .
