Pupils’ promotion - Reports, leaving certificate (apolyterio) and other forms or documents
A pupil is promoted from one grade to the immediate next one each year, based on his/her age or during the school year, if there are special reasons and with the approval of the school’s inspector, but in no case to a higher grade than the one permitted by the child’s age. At the end of the school year the approved certificate or any other document which is required from the Relevant Authority are completed and brought for register to the next or the same class, in case of non promotion. For every child who finishes his/her attendance at the primary school, a leaving certificate or any other documents required from the Relevant Authority are issued, which are sent by the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth. These documents are presented to the gymnasium for registering the child.
The certificates and/or other documents required from the Relevant Authority for children who will continue their attendance out of Cyprus, are taken by the guardian to the District Education Office for certification. Specifically, the parents/guardians of the pupils who will transfer to a school out of Cyprus have to take the reports/ certificates of attendance that their children have taken from the primary schools to the District Education Office for certification before leaving.
After that, if they go to a country which is included in the following list of countries, they will have to take the certified reports/ certificates of attendance to the Ministry of Justice for certification. But, if they go to another country, which is not included in the following list, then they will have to take the certified reports/ certificates of attendance to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and to the Embassy of the country to which they will go, for certification. Finally, if they wish to have a translation of reports/ certificates of attendance of their children, they will have to take the certified and ratified reports/ certificates of attendance to the Press and Information Office for official translation.
A report or leaving certificate is given to the pupils who finish the school year accordingly. A certificate of attendance is given to the pupils who leave Cyprus before the end of the school year (document ÕÐÁÍ 58 for primary schools and document ÕÐÁÍ 176 for the nursery schools).

Repetition of grade in special circumstances/ ending school attendance/ defer and extension of attendance
A pupil may be required to repeat the same grade for a second consecutive school year, upon the recommendation of the school, after a full determination of the pupil's interest. This can only take place one time during the child's attendance at primary school, following approval by the District Chief Education Officer and inform both the school and the parent/guardian.
The Minister of Education, Sport and Youth, if convinced, following a report from the District Special Education Committee, may give instructions for a child to be temporarily suspended (for more than five consecutive days) or terminate his/her attendance at a pre-primary school, primary school, or special education school and ensure at the same time that an alternative method of education is provided.
If, at the discretion of the pre-primary school teacher and the pre-primary school headteacher, a child who is of the age equal to or older than the age of entry to primary school is deemed to remain in pre-primary school, then a recommendation for the suspension of a child's attendance may be made by the pre-primary headteacher. Upon approval by the respective Chief Education Officer, the child's suspension of attendance in the 1st grade of primary school may be ensured for a period not exceeding the one year. Suspension of attendance for a second year may be exceptionally granted, provided that it is proven that the child's continued presence in pre-primary school will have educational benefits for him/her.
If on September 1st of the school year for which enrollment is made or the child's continuation of attendance is requested, the child is older than 13 years old, an extension of the child's attendance may be granted upon request from the parent and approval by the respective Chief Education Officer. The extension of attendance in primary school cannot exceed the one year.
