Primary Education

Admission requirements

Pupils must enrol in the school that belongs to their educational region. In cases where the parents change their residence, the completion of a special attendance certificate, issued by the previous headteacher is necessary. On any other occasion it is necessary to secure the written permission of the Director of Primary Education. For this purpose, the pupil’s parents will have to complete a special form and submit it to the relevant District Education Office.

Admission of a pupil from a private primary school to a public primary school of the same type in the Republic, takes place when the headteacher of a public school secures the written confirmation of the headteacher of the private school. The enrolled pupil is placed in the grade determined by his/her age and which appears on the attendance certificate or the written permission; under no circumstances he/she is placed in a higher grade.

Enrolment of a pupil from a private primary school to a public primary school “of a different or similar type” or a school outside the Republic of Cyprus, takes place by submitting birth and attendance certificates. The pupil is placed in the grade determined by his/her age. If the pupil’s performance in Greek and Mathematics is lower than the requirements of the grade, he/she should attend, then the pupil is placed in a lower grade provided his/her age allows him/her to complete primary education according to the education laws.
