Biographical Information of Michael Haliassos

haliassosMichael Haliassos holds the Chair in Macroeconomics and Finance at Goethe University Frankfurt. He is a Program Director at the Center for Financial Studies (CFS Program on Household Wealth Management), and a Research Professor at the Mannheim Research Institute on the Economics of Aging (MEA). He is Chairman of the Department of Money and Macroeconomics, and Deputy Dean of the School of Economics and Business, Goethe University Frankfurt, responsible for international affairs. In the past, he has served as Deputy Dean of the School of Economics and Business at the University of Cyprus, and as a member of the University of Cyprus Council and Senate.

Haliassos completed undergraduate studies at the University of Cambridge, U.K. (BA, 1981; MA in Economics, 1986), and graduate studies at Yale University (MA, 1982, M. Phil., 1984 and Ph.D., 1987). He has taught at the University of Maryland, USA (Assistant Professor, 1987-93), at the University of Cyprus (1993-2004), and at Goethe University Frankfurt (2005-Present). He has visited the European University Institute in Florence as Part-time Professor in the Finance and Consumption Chair in summer 2000, spring 2001, and spring 2004 (on sabbatical from Cyprus). He was also Visiting Researcher at CSEF (Center of Studies in Economics and Finance) in Italy, in summer 1998.

His research interests are Macroeconomics, Financial, and Monetary Economics with emphasis on household portfolio choice under labor income risk, stockholding behavior, consumer debt, business equity, the distribution of wealth, the impact of credit market imperfections, and novel approaches to analysing preferences. Haliassos has been a member of the Scientific Committee and scientist in charge of network research on Saving and Portfolios in the European Union Research Training Network on the Economics of Aging in Europe, RTN AGE (2002-2006). He has coordinated a number of international research projects. Together with L. Guiso and T. Jappelli, they have coordinated a major international research project on “Household Portfolios”, involving 30 researchers from nine countries, with results published by MIT Press in early
